What is apartheid? It is the policy of keeping African 1 , and separate 2 Europeans. They are to be kept separate by not being 3 to live as citizens with rights in European towns. They 4 go to European towns to work, but they may not have their families 5 ; they must live in “Bantustans”, the native areas. They are not to 6 with Europeans by sitting in the same cafes, waiting rooms, compartments of trains, seats in parks, etc. Twelve percent of the 7 is left for the Africans to live and 8 on, and this is mostly dry, poor, mountainous land. 9 the Africans are three-quarters of the people. They are 10 to go and work for the Europeans, not only because their lands do not grow enough food to 11 them, but also because they must earn money to 12 their taxes. Each adult African man has to pay 1 pound a year poll tax, and ten shillings a year tax 13 his hut. When they go into European 14 to work, they are not allowed to do 15 work; they are hewers of wood and drawers of water, and their wage is about one-seventh of 16 a European would earn for the same kind of work. 17 a European employs an African to do skilled work of the kind, 18 for Europeans, such as carpentry, both the European and his African employee may be fined 100 pounds. 19 African who takes part in a strike may be fined 500 pounds, and/or 20 to prison for three years.

A.give

B.feed

C.raise

D.keep

我个人认为这个应该是:D

解析:feed“喂养”,这里表示:没有足够的食物来养活他们。raise“抚养”。
