When communications experts get together for a chat, the talk often turns to the future.In particular, there is speculation(思考) over what the next major project will be.It might be a computer, a television or a mobile phone.It might combine the functions of all these things.It will be the ultimate machine—the final product of the communications revolution. The competition to make the ultimate communications gadget had two major rules.The first is that things will get smaller.Computers used to fill whole room.Then they sat on tables.Next people began using laptops.Now we have computers that sit in the palm of the hand. The second rule is that communications devices will be feature rich.That is, they will be able to do more.The latest generation of mobile phones uses something called the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).This provides users with simplified internet access. Users of phones with WAP are able to surf the net by entering commands on their keypad.They can get access to a full range of online services, from the contents of their bank account to the very latest news.It means that people can use their phones to check stock market prices and get the latest traffic information. What makes WAP so important is the fact that it unlocks information.The older generation of mobile phones was convenient but the things they could do were limited.Computers enable people to get access to a whole world of information.But this world is locked up in an ugly grey box.And the box is tied to the wall with electrical cable.WAP combines power and freedom.
